Lewis Hine
Lewis Hine started out as a teacher in New York, but after a school project photographing Ellis Island with students, he quit his teaching job and became a sociological photographer.
Lewis Hine is most well known for his photographs of child laborers. Hine was the photographer for the National Child Labor Committee, a committee that would go on to publish The Survey and pass a Child Labor Amendment through Congress. The works of Lewis Hine brought the evils of child labor to the American people and helped rally support to pass child labor reforms.
Lewis Hine was among some of the first to use photography as a means of documenting history. In his words, he "wanted to show things that had to be corrected". His work as a freelance photographer, documenting the Progressive Era would forever affect labor practices in the United States.
